Quoting from the website of the project, Smart Food was created as part of the research "Abitare nei Territori d’Eccellenza: progetti per l’innovazione compatibile della collina, della montagna e della aree a parco, attivata al Dipartimento di Architettura e Design del Politecnico di Torino", a Fellowship co-financed by Piedmont Region from 2009 to 2013, and started by the Department of Architecture and Design of the Polytechnic University of Turin.
High-quality agribusiness production based on a short supply chain and available to everyone is still, today, highly relevant internationally (Horizon 2020, Expo Milano 2015). The active protection of the landscape through the protection of rural land and the recovery of the disused rural and ex-industrial productive apparatuses, is in contraposition to in-filling techniques and other solutions which resulted from an era of now obsolete studies about dispersed settlements. Understanding the value of rural–urban fringe zones as precious landscape settings that calibrate a precarious balance between built-up areas and nature means taking a first step towards the valorisation of a territory where the city is silent and has to remain silent, where production of food is possible through the recovery of pre-existing real estate properties and the initiation of social innovation. If we also add a will to develop sustainable forms of tourism and new educational proposals in the field of multi-functional agriculture, we can define the concept of Smart-food as a new horizon of meaning for living in the landscapes of excellence.

Curiosità: A bit of trivia: to date, the Architect Roccella has mapped small entrepreneurs located in the Mandria Park area, including several beekeepers. We interface with them in order to create the Park’s products centre. (Guido Cortese)
Note: G. Roccella is Doctor of Research, Fellow and Adjunct Professor in Architectural and Urban Planning at the Polytechnic University of Turin. In the 2013/2014 academic year she teaches the “Atelier Costruire nel Costruito” course (Second year, Architecture degree)..
